What We Do at Heading for Home
At Heading for Home Racehorse Retraining and Adoption Center, we believe that retiring racehorses deserve the chance to be productive after their competing years are through. From a performance perspective, off-the-track race horses can go on to be successful in many different disciplines, including hunter / jumper, eventing, dressage, pleasure, trail, and polo. Our programs are designed to combine the retraining of former racehorses with their participation in equine involved vocational programs, but truly there isn't anything these amazing animals cannot do.

Training and Rehabilitation
Heading for Home’s training and rehabilitation program has been established to ensure that our training programs are well designed, carefully implemented and overseen in such a manner that ensures the animals in our charge are thoughtfully taken care of and properly rehabilitated. Our goal is to ensure that Heading for Home horses become adequately prepared to enter the next chapter in their lives.
Lasting a minimum of 90 days, our program includes a variety of disciplines ranging from extensive ground work, to work under saddle, gymkhana and trail. Some of our horses are schooled to participate in our equine involved vocational programs, but truly there isn’t anything these amazing animals cannot do.

Equine Involved Vocational Programs
As emotional beings, horses play a pivotal role in the therapeutic process, communicating “feelings” and reflecting behavior to individuals while advancing their life skills through our vocational programs.
Through our partnerships with local schools and other agencies that participate in equine involved vocational programs, Heading for Home offers this unique opportunity to families in need. This program has the capacity to reach large numbers of children, adults and veterans while also creating a venue for successfully moving a retired race horse into a positive and rewarding new career.

Education and Advocacy
Education and advocacy are integral part of the Heading for Home mission. Our education initiatives support our commitment to the community and they complement our vocational endeavors; while our advocacy programs champion the plight of the horses and provide a forum for discussion concerning transition training and adoption.
